As expected four changes were made to the 18-member Pakistan hockey squad announced here on Saturday for the upcoming Azlan Shah Cup scheduled to be held from March 9 to 17 in Ipoh, Malaysia.

Those who made it to the national team for half-line position are Tassawar Abbas and Amir Shahzad while strikers Imran junior and Irfan junior have also been inducted with Mohammad Imran being retained as captain.

The 22nd Sultan Azlan Shah Cup received a major boost in sponsorship as RM1.7 million was handed over by sponsors at a ceremony in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

Heading the list of contributions was the Sultan Azlan Shah Foundation, contributing RM500,000 with Raja Dato Seri Elena Sultan Azlan Shah presenting the mock cheque.

Argentina defeated Malaysia 1-0 to qualify for the final of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia.

It was heartbreak for Great Britain as they watched from the stands where a solitary goal was enough to deny them a chance to play in the final against New Zealand.

But the story of the day was Pakistan’s fall from grace as the Asian Champions finished as wodden spoonists after they lost 2-1 to Great Britain.

Indian hockey striker S.V. Sunil was today reprimanded for showing his middle finger to spectators after scoring the match-winner against Pakistan in the ongoing Azlan Shah Cup.

Tournament Director Sarinder Dillon of Hong Kong issued an “official reprimand” after a disciplinary hearing in the team hotel where Sunil and Indian team manager Manoj Bhore were present.

India is virtually out of the final of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup when they were defeated 3-2 by Argentina in Ipoh, Malaysia this evening.

On a day where Malaysia came from two goals down to defeat the mighty Pakistanis 3-2, New Zealand too was defeated for the first time, going down 2-1 to Great Britain.

It was their third defeat in the tournament and they have only one match remaining – against arch-rivals Pakistan on Thursday night. They have six points from five matches.
